Purchase options and add-ons
Have you been thinking about starting your own freelance writing business, but you have no idea what to expect? There is a lot more to freelance writing than the writing itself and the same holds true for all sorts of other freelance businesses like photography, graphic design and app development.
Are you ready to step up to the challenge?
A full-time professional freelance writer since 2006, Michael Kwan shares lessons and guidance from his very own first-hand experience in the industry.
In this book, you'll learn how to treat your freelancing as a business, how to set realistic goals to move your career forward, how to attract the right kinds of clients, how to set your rates and fees, how to overcome the pitfalls of urban cabin fever, and so much more. You too can earn a full-time income working from home.
Praise for Beyond the Margins

"It's an engaging book.... In this book, as the subtitle says, he offers a guide on how to get into the freelance business, whether you’re a writer or not. I suspect if you’re in any other endeavour, say you want to be your own boss, you’ll find a great deal in this book that’s useful and helpful."
~ Joseph Planta, The Commentary
"Beyond the Margins effortlessly addresses the practicalities of the freelance life.... This is a good, no frills guide to the freelance life, and an affordable way to find out what it’s all about. I highly recommend it."
~ Sharon Hurley Hall, Get Paid to Write Online
"While the title says it's for first-timers, there are lessons here that served to remind me that there are better ways to run by writing business."

Michael does an outstanding job of covering the positives and negatives of being a freelance writer, and provides the types of tips and tricks that only someone that has been there and done that - successfully - can provide. His words should provide a dose of reality for those looking for the quick and easy path to online riches, but also provide a huge stepping stone for those that are ready to roll up their sleeves and become a successful freelance writer.
Beyond the Margins lives up to the name as well, because many of the lessons that Michael shares are applicable to any entrepreneur that is trying to make their own way. This was a great read and I would highly recommend for anyone that is interested in writing or starting their own business.
I am not a writer, but feel that a lot of the advice can be applied to my field of freelance computer consulting. Some of the best advice in this book is the advice that most people overlook, such as marketing and separating your hobby from your business.
I have read other books on starting your own business that were longer, but less detailed and infomative than Beyond the Margins. I think you will enjoy this book very much.
This guide puts everything into perspective and makes the landscape clear for both seasoned veterans like myself and for those who might be thinking of making the jump into freelancing. While the title says it's for first-timers, there are lessons here that served to remind me that there are better ways to run by writing business. It never hurts to have some refreshing and clear advice from an expert.
Good work, Michael! Love the book!
